°F → °C: (°F − 32) × 5/9
°C → K: °C + 273.15

Fun fact: −40°C and −40°F are exactly the same temperature - the crossover point of the two scales.

How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

To convert a temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32: °F = (°C * 9/5) + 32. For example, 20°C becomes (20 * 1.8) + 32 = 68°F. To go the other way, reverse the steps: °C = (°F - 32) * 5/9. The converter above does both directions live, and also handles Kelvin, the scientific scale.

Worked examples

  • 0°C (water freezes) = 32°F
  • 20°C (room temperature) = 68°F
  • 37°C (body temperature) = 98.6°F
  • 100°C (water boils) = 212°F

The three temperature scales

Celsius is used by most of the world and sets 0 at the freezing point of water and 100 at its boiling point. Fahrenheit, used mainly in the United States, puts freezing at 32 and boiling at 212, giving finer gradations for everyday weather. Kelvin is the SI unit used in science; it starts at absolute zero (the coldest possible temperature) and shares the same degree size as Celsius, so K = °C + 273.15.

The point where the scales meet

There is exactly one temperature where Celsius and Fahrenheit read the same number: -40°C equals -40°F. It is a handy trivia fact and a useful check that a conversion formula is working correctly. Normal human body temperature, often quoted as 98.6°F, is 37°C, though healthy readings vary by person and time of day.
