How exact age is calculated

Your age is the gap between your date of birth and a later date (today, by default). This calculator works it out the way people actually count: it subtracts the years, then the months, then the days, borrowing from the next-largest unit when a value would go negative. If today's day-of-month is earlier than your birth day-of-month, it borrows a full month, and that borrowed month uses the real number of days in the calendar rather than a flat 30. That is why the result is precise to the day instead of a rough decimal.

Leap years and why they matter

A leap year adds February 29 to keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400 (so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not). This affects age in two ways: it changes the day count between dates, and people born on February 29 only get a calendar birthday every four years, though most celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in common years.

How many days old am I?

To count total days, the calculator measures the full span between the two dates, including every leap day in between. This is useful for milestone-watching: many people like to mark their 10,000th day (about 27 years), their billionth second (about 31.7 years), or a round number of weeks. Because the tool counts in real calendar units, these figures are accurate rather than estimated.
