What are macros?

Macros (macronutrients) are the three nutrients that supply your calories: protein and carbohydrate at 4 calories per gram, and fat at 9 calories per gram. While a calorie target governs weight change, your macro split shapes body composition, energy, and satiety. This tool turns your calorie goal into daily protein, carb, and fat targets for several diet styles.

Macros vs. calories

Calories tell you how much energy you eat; macros tell you what that energy is made of. Two diets with the same calories but very different macros can produce different results in muscle retention, hunger, and performance. That is why "if it fits your macros" tracking goes a step beyond simple calorie counting, especially when your goal is building or keeping muscle.

How much protein do you need?

Protein is the macro most worth getting right, because it preserves muscle and keeps you full. A common evidence-based range for active people and those losing weight is roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day (about 0.7 to 1.0 grams per pound). Once protein is set, the rest of your calories are divided between carbs and fat according to your preference and diet style.

Common macro splits

  • Balanced: moderate carbs, protein, and fat for general health and flexibility.
  • High-protein: extra protein for muscle gain or fat loss while preserving muscle.
  • Low-carb: reduced carbs, higher fat, which some find improves satiety.
  • Keto: very low carb, high fat, designed to shift the body toward burning fat for fuel.
  • Endurance: higher carbs to fuel long training sessions.
